National Black Dog Day!

National Black Dog Day!

October 1st is National Black Dog Day.

A very important day for us at the BDCS.  Black Dog Day is meant to bring awareness to the Black Dog Syndrome.

What is Black Dog Syndrome?

Black dogs have the lowest adoption rate and the highest euthanasia rate than any other color dog in shelters. This phenomenon persists regardless of a particular dog’s breed, general behavior, size, personality, or age. Those that are adopted typically spend about 4-times longer in the shelter waiting for their forever family.

Why is this happening?

  • They are often depicted as evil or aggressive in movies, ads or on television
  • Black dogs can be difficult to photograph which gives them a disadvantage when shelters are posting pictures of adoptable animals.
  • They are often over looked in shelters when lighter faced dogs show more expression that is not as easily seen on dark faced dogs.

How can you help?

  • Are you or someone you know considering a new pup?  Encourage to think Black!
  • Spread the word,  BDS is largely a subconscious prejudice that people quickly move past once they become aware of it.
  • Black dogs are beautiful!  Have a great picture of yours? Share it!
  • Lastly, consider donating to a local shelter. Shelters need your help.  If money is tight, your time is just as appreciated.  Many allow dog walking and playtime that helps in socialization and stimulation for these poor animals.  It's also good for our souls too!
